Q&A – DANA MURZYN

Q: What was your favorite memory while playing for the Flames?

A: My favorite memory would be winning the Stanley Cup in 1989. Second to that, it would be scoring the only hat-trick in my career in an 11- 2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Saddledome in front of our hometown crowd.

Q: Who was your favorite teammate and why?

A: Jyrki Lumme was my favorite teammate. He was my defence partner for seven years and we were roommates as well. We became great friends and still are to this day. Our lives were very similar growing up even though we were continents away from each other.

Q: Where did you settle down when you retired from hockey?

A: We settled down in Calgary, it’s our hometown to start with so it was an easy decision to retire here.

Q: What did you do after you hung up your skates?

A: Since I have retired I have bought into a butcher shop where I learned to cut meat and make sausage. I worked for Willow Park Wines and Spirits doing outside sales. I built a spec timber frame home in Sun Peaks, B.C. Then I owned and operated a custom millwork shop for 12 years here in Calgary. I have recently shut that down and now I’m searching for the next chapter in my life.

Q: What are your interests and passions outside the game?

A: I am an avid outdoorsman who loves to fish and hunt. I also enjoy gardening, playing alumni hockey, and spending as much time as possible with my friends and family.

Q: Tell us a bit about your family?

A: I have a wife of 32 years, Kim, who is a native Calgarian. We have two sons – Tyler, 28, and Clayton, who is 25.
